WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cancer experts who probed every gene in tumors from two of the hardest-to-treat cancers found that cancer is much more complicated than anyone thought -- and say they found why a cure is so unlikely after a tumor has spread.
But they also discovered a potential new way to treat a common and fatal form of brain cancer, and opened the door to finding cancer before it has spread, when it can still be cured surgically, they reported on Thursday in the journal Science.
"Cancer is very complex -- more complex than we had believed. It is not going to be easy to develop therapies," said Dr. Bert Vogelstein of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Two doses of varicella vaccine protect better than one, confirms a US report on the national vaccination programme published this week.
The United States introduced vaccination of children against chickenpox in 1995. One dose was recommended for children aged 12 months to 12 years and two doses for susceptible adolescents and adults. The vaccine policy was changed in 2006 to recommend a second vaccination for all.
The review by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Tufts University Medical School in Boston found that the vaccination programme had resulted in "a dramatic decline in disease" (Pediatrics 2008;122:744-51, doi:10.1542/peds.2008-0567).
It added: "Even with high vaccination coverage, the effectiveness of one dose of vaccine did not generate sufficient population immunity to prevent community transmission."

Every 9 1/2 minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV. That's about 150 every day - more than 1,000 a week. This is part of the news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recently unveiled HIV incidence statistics, and it has critical implications for the nation.
